Poverty as Whip
03:24
|
|||
Not getting along with my boss was a problem that I had
It’s just that he’s an idiot and I think that he’s stupid
But money is the way you get ahead these days
I don’t want to go to work or get paid
But I do anyway
I’ve got a good talking game
I can convince any idiot I can do anything
But money is the way you get ahead these days
I don’t want to go to work or get paid
Do you know what I mean
I resent the bosses for their choices of a career
We are horses they are riders
Poverty is their whip

You think I’ll forget my baby
I guess I will someday
You think I’ll get along with other people
I guess I will some way
Give me the girl to lean on
Then set me on my own
Let me be a man I have the
Stamina to stand alone
You ask me if I’ll miss her kisses
I guess I will sometimes
You ask me if I think I can meet a new girl
I don’t know you never know

My Brother
03:16
|
|||
My brother’s like a monk you see from medieval days
It’s not like he isn’t always flying around on planes
Time zones can’t change him he’s got no patience
He’s a beautiful old lady on a plane with a cup of cold coffee
When I’m depressed the thing that helps the best
Make a big purchase have sex
Hope that someone’s error comes up in your favor
Listen to music pray for peace
Oh God please give me religion
I want Catholism
I lack discipline I do weed and Clonopin
I shouldn’t be complaining I want to go to vacation

Weeds Coming Up
03:50
|
|||
There’s an old tree at the back of my property
Right on the line of the legal boundary
Half belongs to the neighbor half belongs to me
Neither of us really wanted to cut it down anyway
It didn’t make nuts and it didn’t make fruits
It just collected light and sent it down to the roots
When you cut them with a shovel they leak a sticky juice
From the place that you cut grows a pernicious root
Cleaning up the stuff outside the garage
Taking away the stuff leaning against the fence
Growing under the garden and the sidewalk cement
I finally decided I’d had about enough
I was thinking about when I get old
And I can’t bend over cause my back’s broke
I can’t pull the string to start the lawnmower
They take me away to the old people’s home
I went to the rental and I rented some stuff
A tree branch chipper and a tree-cutting truck
You should have seen how long it took me to clear up the brush
I had the tree down in an hour almost choked on sawdust
I chipped the branches I was covered in cuts
I called the rental agency when the tree chipper busted
They sent out a mechanic for a diagnostic
He cleaned the carburetor said the throttle was stuck
The sting of the bee and the bite of the bug
The cuts fill up with the infection’s pus
Stay inside in the summer I can’t go to work
It’s the future and it’s hard to get antibiotics

Invest in My Restaurant
03:45
|
|||
Invest in my restaurant the only favor that I want
I was your friend in high school the cool kids made fun of you
I negotiated a rate for a totally decent place
Great rapport with the landlord I already got four investors
It’s in an old hardware store
Just around the corner
From an elementary school
Moms wait in cars for their carpools
Invest in my restaurant the only favor that I want
I was your friend in high school the cool kids made fun of you
It’s in a good neighborhood lots of millionaires’ wives
Omelets for breakfast for lunch salad of endives
It’s just around the corner
From some very fancy stores
Ladies used to luxury
Like lamb kebabs and toasted seeds
Invest in my restaurant the only favor that I want
Catering in the spring summertime outdoor weddings
I’ve got a chef from Quebec got an accent like he’s French
Learned to cook at the Cordon Bleu that French cooking school
Remember when you were ridiculed
When you got kicked in middle school
They laughed at you for your hairdo
You know I’ll always be there for you

Are You Happy
01:57
|
|||
When you pick me up at lunchtime can you make sure to wear
A skirt that covers your ass cause everybody stares
It’s hard to come back from lunchtime when I’m working uptown
The doormen standing around ask if you’re a hooker or a clown
When you look into the mirror are you happy with what you see
Are you happy with what you see tell me now baby
When you wake up in the morning are you happy with who you be
Are you happy with who you be tell me now baby
You say you can’t wear a t-shirt cause your tits will sway
I say that’s okay and then you do it anyway
What do you think you’re doing hanging all around me
You got another man in Bushwick you tell him all about me
If all you want is to borrow my car for a bit
You don’t have to do this shit just don’t get a parking ticket
If all you want is to visit your man for the fourth
Then here’s eleven dollars you can take the Metro North

I Was Depressed
03:22
|
|||
I tried to read the New Yorker
I can’t understand the article
I get tired I shut my eyes and take a nap
I wake up it’s so hot I smell bad
I put the sprinkler on the garden
But I’m too disgusted with everything to turn it off again
I don’t know what’s wrong with me this summer
In the fall I’ll try to be a better lover
When you go away it’s clear to me
I can get as bad as my brother Davey
When you get home I’ll be gone
Maybe what I need is this vacation

Who Chose Those Roses
02:57
|
|||
Today I saw somebody that I’ve seen before
Usually don’t see somebody cause I have to work
Don’t look don’t see baby don’t notice me
Who chose those roses you hold in your hand
I am so sad never had Jesus Christ
I need to keep some deep love in my life
Don’t look don’t see baby don’t notice me
Who chose those roses you hold in your hand

The Economy
02:47
|
|||
The expansions and contractions at the edges and interiors
Of our cities is worrying carpenters and contractors
They’re looking for ways to make their businesses improve
They’re fixing people’s doors and putting dormers on people’s roofs
I don’t care if there’s too much work or a work shortage
As long as I can make enough money to pay the mortgage
I ‘d rather stay at home all day and treat my baby rough
But she’s in school now she ain’t got time for that stuff
It’s true has the economy affected you
It affected my baby and now it’s affecting me too
She’s got the school book she’s got the school loans she’s going to be a physician
They’re going to vex her with their questions all the time accosting her
Maybe I’ll get lucky writing songs down in Nashville
Maybe I’ll just have to keep replacing windows and windowsills

My Career In Politics
02:29
|
|||
I went down to city hall I had a meeting with the mayor
We were going to talk about some things I had on my mind
Bike lanes taking up the space on all sides of the road
Leave no place for plants and trees to grow
We don’t need no more self-righteous bicyclists in this town
I went down to the Trimet office down by Pioneer Courthouse Square
To see if the transportation czar was in his office which is there
He was meeting with his advisors making decisions about bridges
He asked me to sit down and give him suggestions about the town
We don’t need no more self-righteous bicyclists in this town
